Poll: ANC Will Lose Majority if Dlamini-Zuma Becomes Party Leader

December 12, 2017

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 12-12-2017

A research and polling company survey has revealed that the African National Congress (ANC) is likely to lose its majority if the party elects presidential hopeful Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma as its leader at the national elective conference.

The conference takes place at Nasrec, south of Johannesburg from the 16th to the 20th of December.

Ratepop‚ a technology-based research and polling company‚ focused on the consequences of the ANC’s leadership battle ahead of the national elections in 2019.

Spokesperson Socratis Avgitidis says the survey showed that Ramaphosa remains the “overwhelming” popular choice among the ANC electorate‚ with the support of 58.9% of ANC voters compared to 16% for Dlamini-Zuma.

“The ANC polled approximately 54% in the local government elections in 2016. So if Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma is at the helm of the party, the power is substantially reduced and realistically a lot. So we draw the conclusion that they will drop below 50% based on what we asked ANC voters.”

Avgitidis says the research and polls are fairly accurate.

“Historically speaking, they’ve been very accurate. We believe there is a 5.4% margin of error. Remember we are not predicting who’s going to be elected the president of the ANC. What we saying is, post that election, this is the sentiments of the people.”

Avgitdis has indicated supporters of opposition parties were also polled on how they would vote in the 2019 elections saying, should Ramaphosa become leader of the ANC‚ 50.9% of the Democratic Alliance’s (DA) black voters say they will vote for the ANC in 2019.

If Dlamini-Zuma becomes leader of the ANC‚ only 6.9% of the DA’s black voters will desert the party and vote for the ANC in 2019.
