Police union POPCRU says it is distraught over the continued killing of police officers. In the latest incident, Warrant Officer Roger Mavundla was shot with his wife and three children in Margate in KwaZulu-Natal. According to the South African Police Service reports, there have been at least 22 police officers killed between July and September 2022.

In an interview with Radio Islam International, POPCRU’s Richard Mamabula said there had been a rise in the number of officers killed within the last three years.

According to Mamabolo, there has yet to be a plan by the SAPS to combat the challenge.

“The only thing offered by the SAPS Management is the attending of funerals and memorial services,” he says.

It has been seen that police officers are mainly killed for their firearms, and in some cases, they are currently conducting investigations. Some officers are killed while on duty, similarly in the recent case of Warrant Officer Roger Mavundla.

There has been engagement with the SAPS Management concerning the matter, and there has been no plan for dealing with police killings, as per Mamabolo.

Meanwhile, post-traumatic stress disorder is high among policemen and women as they are unsure whether they will arrive home safely.

Mamabolo said the past year had seen trends of police stations being attacked, leaving the members of the SAPS to operate under immense situations.
