Despite the officer who shot dead Duante Wright as well as a police chief having stepped down, demonstrations in Minnesota have not ended over Sunday’s killing.

The BBC reports that Chief Tim Gannon and Officer Kim Potter have quit the Brooklyn Center force. Potter claims to have shot the 20-year-old unarmed Black man accidently after having drawn her gun instead of her Taser. Police Chief Gannon has supported Potter’s version of events. Gannon had on Monday said that Wright’s shooting appeared to have be an “accidental discharge” after Potter mistook her service pistol for a stun gun. Wright’s family has rejected her assertion.

Fresh clashes between police and protesters erupted for a third night last night. Bottles and other projectiles were thrown at the Brooklyn Center police headquarters. Officers responded with tear gas, stun grenades and rubber bullets. According to the BBC, more than 60 people were arrested.

Wright’s mother, Katie described what had occurred on Sunday, saying her son called her after he was pulled over. She said she heard police order him to get out of the vehicle. Thereafter scuffling could be heard, as well as an officer telling Wright to cut the call. When Wright’s mother was eventually able to call back, Wright’s girlfriend answered and informed her of the shooting. Katie Wright said, “She pointed the phone toward the driver’s seat and my son was laying there, unresponsive. That was the last time that I’ve seen my son.”

Meanwhile, 100 protesters marched on the Portland Police Association Building in Oregon last night. Shortly flames could be seen emerging from the police building. The gathering was declared a riot.
