KwaZulu-Natal police are investigating a case of arson after five people including two children were killed in a fire in Mountain Rise.
It’s understood the blaze at the family’s home at ‘The Village’ started in the early hours of Thursday morning.
According to the Public Eye newspaper in Pietermaritzburg, there are unconfirmed reports the house may have been petrol bombed.
The police’s Mthokozisi Ngobese says the motive behind the incident is not known.
“Our colleague came to attend the scene and they found out that there were five people who may inhaled the smoke. As a result they were declared to have passed on immediately. Currently we are investigating two cases. One of arson and five cases or murder. The investigation is underway.”
Ngobese says no arrests have been made.
