Police Deployed Across KwaZulu-Natal to Quell Volatile Protests & Lawlessness

July 10, 2021

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner has mobilised police officers from across the province to be deployed in all districts and along major routes and key points to deal with criminal elements that are responsible for recent incidents of lawlessness and volatile protests.

It’s believed that those behind the demonstrations are against the incarceration of former President Jacob Zuma

Some of the protestors hijacked trucks and set them alight in the vicinity of the Mooi River toll plaza.

The police’s Jay Naicker says they will be focussing on enforcing the regulations of the disaster management act especially the convening of illegal gatherings including those who are not observing curfew regulations.

“A large number of people have already been arrested for incidents of criminality witnessed in the province yesterday and operations are ongoing. Those cases where people have not been arrested we have registered cases and we will be following up on those investigations and ensuring that the perpetrators are arrested.”

He says a number of incidents were witnessed where people were using the protest to enrich themselves by looting shops and other businesses.

Naicker says police will not tolerate such incidents of criminality and will be dealing harshly with those found flouting the law.
