Police in Springs on the East Rand have declared the N12 Etwatwa off-ramp as a high risk crime area following a spate of murders, hijacking and robberies.

Last week a 19-year-old man and a woman in her 20s were murdered by at least three gunmen near a bridge above the N12.

It’s understood the bakkie they were travelling in ran out of diesel and two other passengers went to go look for help.

When they returned, they discovered the pair had been shot.

The Springs police stations Johannes Ramphora has urged people to be vigilant and not stop or sleep in the area.

“We would like to warn the community or any person in that area, they must be vigilant and be aware of any person or suspicious of three or five guys which are very are very heavily armed. Then they target those people and then they rob them of their belongings or their vehicles. Sometime they even commit murder.”

Ramphora says people should contact police immediately if they notice suspicious activity in the area.
