Police Clarify Explosive Device Found at Roshnee Masjid a Hoax Bomb

August 01, 2018

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 01-08-2018

Police have clarified that a homemade explosive device found at a mosque in Roshnee near Vereeniging is actually a hoax bomb and contained no explosives.

A 36-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday after he left a bag containing the hoax bomb in Masjid Taqwa.

It’s understood community members were praying at the masjid on Monday when they noticed the man who was not known to the community leaving his bag behind after the prayer.

The police earlier on Wednesday stated that a handmade bomb was found at the mosque.

The polices Fikile Funda says the people who were first on the scene thought the device was a homemade bomb, but this was not the case.

“When we dispatched our bomb disposal unit, they found that it’s a hoax bomb, it’s not a bomb. There was no threat, it was only a bag that contained what looks like bomb but it was not bomb. Actually it was a flask that had holes that was wrapped in sello tape.”

Fund says the man will appear in the court on Thursday on charges of carrying a hoax bomb.
