Momentum South Africa says the money raised on Pink Day will go a long way in creating awareness about breast cancer in South Africa.

More than R 1.1 million was raised on Sunday at the 4th Pink Day International cricket clash between the Proteas and Pakistan at the Wanderers in Johannesburg.

The campaign is an annual event which aims to achieve an objective of increasing breast cancer awareness and raising money for breast cancer support.

Head of sponsorship for Momentum Carel Bosman says the early detection of cancer saves lives.

He says the money raised is used for various projects including ground breaking cancer research which involves understanding whether chemotherapy has a different effect on Africans to Europeans and upgrading facilities at the Charlotte Maxeke Hospital.

“Every single day, there are women and men sitting in that oncology unit getting the news of either not being diagnosed or diagnosed and we just felt that if all of South Africa can get together, we can make that a much more dignified experience which is important.”

Bosman says some of the money will also be used to partner with other organisations to conduct breast cancer screening and testing in informal settlements and townships.
