Pietermaritzburg High Court Dismisses Jacob Zuma’s Bid to Stay Arrest

July 09, 2021

Faizel Patel – 09/07/2021

The Pietermaritzburg High Court has dismissed Jacob Zuma’s application to stay his prison sentence with costs.

Judge Bhekisisa Mnguni delivered the judgment on Friday as Zuma spends his third day at the Estcourt Correctional Centre in KwaZulu-Natal.

Zuma brought the application before the court on Tuesday, arguing that his arrest should be stayed until the Constitutional Court hears his rescission application next Monday.

Earlier this week Zuma’s lawyer Dali Mpofu referred to the Helen Suzman Foundation as “busy-bodies” who had no business to oppose the former president’s bid to stay out of jail pending the outcome of his rescission application in the Constitutional Court.

The  Helen Suzman Foundation’s Anton van Dalsen told Radio Islam that it was unlikely that the Pietermaritzburg High Court would suspend the Apex Court’s judgement.

Zuma was found in contempt of court on last week and handed a 15 month jail term by the Constitutional Court for violating a court order ordering him to appear before the State Capture Commission and Justice Raymond Zondo.
