Pick n Pay Apologises for Alleged Fraudulent Use of SANHA Logo

July 08, 2015

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News, 2015-07-08

Pick n Pay has come under fire for allegedly fraudulently using the South African National Halaal Authority’s (SANHA) logo on a product that is not halaal certified.

Shoppers have taken to social media to complain about a promotion ran by Pick n Pay where non-halal pies were certified as halaal.

In a statement Sanha has urged Muslim customers to exercise restraint as it does not certify any Pick n Pay pies or bake offs.

Pick n Pay has apologised to its Muslim customers and Sanha for using its logo for its recent pie promotion.

Spokesperson of the chain, Tamra Veley has blamed the error on a printer problem.

Pick n Pay says the incorrect promotion material was removed from its stores when the problem was brought to its notice.

In May the supermarket chain apologised to customers after a food product in Cape Town was correctly certified as halaal by the Muslim Judicial Council (MJC), but was incorrectly labelled as containing 49% pork which caused outrage. – EWN
