The situation in Ennerdale south of Johannesburg remains tense as residents continue to protest over housing and service delivery.
Police have fired rubber bullets, teargas and stun grenades on residents early this morning as demonstrations turned violent.
Residents barricaded several roads with rocks and burning tyres preventing people from entering of leaving the area.
Radio Islam’s Faheema Patel, a resident of Ennerdale says people are scared to leave the houses.
“This entire protest has become violent, it’s definitely not a peaceful protest. People are starting to loot shops and just help themselves to whatever they want, many business have been affected. Civilians and everybody else are at risk here in the entire Ennerdale community.”
Police remain on high alert in the area.
