Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga says parents who are not comfortable with taking their children to school are at liberty to keep them at home.
Motshekga gave a briefing on schools state of readiness on Sunday ahead of a further reopening of the sector during the COVID-19 lockdown.
Over 2 million grade R, 6 and 11 pupils will return to the classrooms on Monday after almost four months at home.
She says provinces are at different levels of readiness to return Grade R learners.
“We agree that those provinces that are not ready to receive Grade R’s must provide strategic and realizable plans to ensure the re-incorporation of Grade R learners to school within and later than the end of July.”
Motshekga says provinces that are ready to receive the Grade R pupils should proceed to receive learners.
“What is critically important that all Grade R and pre-Grade R learners in schools who have already returned to schools must remain in schools. Those schools that meet the health, safety and social distancing protocols can reopen for the Grade R and pre-Grade R’s tomorrow.”
Motshekga says it’s not easy running schools under the COVID-19 environment.
