A Palestinian-American has become the first Muslim American police chief of Prospect Park Police Department in New Jersey in the US.
Chief Ammen Matari took the oath on the holy Qur’an during the blessed month of Ramadan while accompanied by his family.
Hawthorne Online news reports that when Prospect Park Police Chief Charlie Atie retired in July last year, Mayor Mohamed Khairullah announced that Matari would be officially established as the Chief of the police department in April.
Khairullah says Matari has demonstrated tremendous leadership capabilities since the departure of Chief Charlie Atie.
“The Public Safety Council Committee and I were impressed with his plans for the Police Department which includes additional community policing and innovative quality of life initiatives.”
According to Hawthorne Online news, Matari is the second Palestinian-American to hold such a position in the state of New Jersey, following Police Chief Mustafa Rabboh of Bergenfield.
