Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan has been rushed to hospital after being shot in the leg at a rally in the city of Wazirabad in Punjab.

Syed Ali Zafar, a senator and senior member of Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) party, confirmed that the former PM was shot.

“The ex-prime minister is stable and has just checked in to the hospital. He is apparently alright but nonetheless the issue is very serious – it can have very serious repercussions in the future politics of Pakistan,” he said.

However, District police officer Ghazanfar Ali confirmed that one person was killed and nine others were wounded in the attack.

Meanwhile, the man suspected of attacking Khan was shot dead after the incident.

According to local media, Khan was targeted during a political rally in Punjab and several other PTI members in what has been described as an assassination attempt on Khan.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said he “strongly condemns” the attack against Khan and has launched a probe into the attack on Khan.

“Violence should have no place in national politics,” says Sharif.

President Arif Alvi called the shooting a “heinous assassination attempt” and said he is praying for Khan’s speedy recovery.
