Pakistan Enters Lockdown Ahead of Eid

May 08, 2021

Pakistan has imposed an eight-day partial lockdown ahead of the celebration of Eid al-Fitr next week. The BBC reports that travel across the country has been restricted from Saturday until May 16. Only private vehicles, taxis and trains, will be allowed to operate, all at a reduced capacity. Further, non-essential businesses and tourism sites are to be closed.

Pakistan had recorded more than 140 000 cases and 3 000 deaths in April. The country is currently in the grip of a third wave of coronavirus infections. There had been previous, earlier warnings that restrictions would be imposed in light of neighboring India’s devastating coronavirus scourge.

Pakistan recorded an additional on Saturday, according to Pakistan’s health ministry, 4 109 positive cases were recorded on Saturday alone, but according to the BBC, the actual figure is likely higher due to under reporting.

There are fears that the virus will spread with people gathering to celebrate Eid with their families. On Friday, Dr Faisal Sultan, an advisor on health to Prime Minister Imran Khan, said Pakistan was facing a “critical period” as the holy month of Ramadan draws to a close. He said infections could again surge if measures were not taken now. Khan, meanwhile had reportedly been resistant another nationwide lockdown, because of the harm it could cause to the economy. Asad Umar, Pakistan’s federal minister for planning, on Saturday tweeted with respect to India that: “The entire region is exploding with cases and deaths”. He added: “The need for caution is clear. The danger is higher than ever and knocking at our doors.”
