Overport Masjid Fire Not Muazzin’s Fault

May 16, 2017

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 16-05-2017

The committee for a masjid in Overport KZN which was gutted by fire has urged people to refrain from forwarding messages about the cause of the blaze without establishing the facts.

The Dawat-E-Islami masjid on Kenilworth Road in Overport caught alight yesterday with speculation that it may have been caused by a heater in the muazzin’s (one who calls to prayer) room.

The cause of the fire which has not yet been determined spread through the main prayer area of the building, incinerating the roof structure.

The committee’s  Mohammad Ashraf Khan says the exact cause of the fire is being investigated.

“Indeed we are very, very sad with regards to the burning of the masjid and it was not the muazzin’s fault. We have had a lot of rain, it’s an old building and due to the water we assume it could be an electrical fault.”

Khan has appealed to the Muslim community to assist with donations to repair the damage cause to the masjid.

“We humbly appeal to Muslims to assist us Insha’Allah to try and put the House of Almighty Allah back together. May Allah reward you in this world and thee hereafter.”
