Our Shameful Conduct in Masajid

May 31, 2017

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 31-05-2017

With a week of the blessed month of Ramadan almost over, questions have been raised about the etiquettes and behaviour of people in masajid.

During Ramadan, the masajid tends to attract more people as opposed to other months as they feel the need to reap the benefits this holy month has to offer.

However it’s extremely sad that some nuances have become a recurring habit among some people which totally disrespects the house of Allah and other Musallees.

One of the more contentious issues are people who are inconsiderate when parking. Every year Imams educate musallee’s on this issue, but it falls on deaf ears which results in altercations.

A Student, teacher & author of Islamic Sciences of Darul Iftaa Institute Muhammad ibn Adam says on Twitter: “Park cars ‘legally’ at Tarawih prayers, without causing inconvenience – even if it means parking at a distance and walking to the Masjid.”

Another issue is young children who accompany their fathers to the masajid.

Many fathers take their young sons to the masajid during Ramadan, excited that his child can engage in the Taraweeh salaah.

However on occasion, children tend to become bored and mischievous which is in their nature resulting in a disturbance during salaah.

Fathers who take their sons to masajid should take responsibility for their wellbeing and ensure that the child’s behaviour is in commensurate with the respect and rules of the house of Allah.

Another complaint we see often are peoples gripes about ‘how long the Taraweeh salaah was’.

While there are infinite rewards for listening to the recitation of the Qur’an in Taraweeh, there are also various masajid that have different times to please everyone.

It’s also very concerning that many people criticise the huffadh saying they read very slow and make a lot of mistakes.

Well, being a hafiz is a great gift that Allah has granted a person and the stature that comes with being a hafiz unfathomable.

A post on the Darul Uloom Zakariyya Facebook pages states: “Don’t talk bad about Huffadh who makes mistakes in Taraweeh. They are reading the words of Allah to Allah, wouldn’t you tremble?”

While there are many other problems which include disputes about who should be in charge or change the salaah times board, air cons, fans and even shoes, as Muslims we should be cognisant of the fact the we are guests in the house of Allah during the month of Ramadan and also during every other time we come to the masjid.

The prophet (S.A.W.) taught us that the Masajid are Allah’s houses and that they have etiquette and rules that should be learned and upheld by every Muslim.
