oThongathi residents burn Jojo tanks in protest over lack of water

August 25, 2022

Umamah Bakharia

Residents of Hambanathi, oThangathi north of Durban, have blocked the street while burning Jojo tanks in protest against the lack of water in the region.

They say that the eThekwini Municipality has not met their needs as they have been facing water scarcity since the floods in April.

The residents have expressed frustration over the lack of water tankers being supplied.

They say this has been happening since the floods destroyed the water treatment plant that supplies water to the area.

The municipality says the R31 million water plant construction project, which began in mid-July, will take up to four months to complete.

Meanwhile, Umgeni water says this is due to a rock fall responsible for the damage caused to its Durban high treatment plant.

Tongaat Civic Association has called on the government to urgently intervene to provide water for residents.

This is a developing story.
