One person has been injured after a small tanker exploded on the N1 highway near Malibongwe Drive, north of Johannesburg on Friday afternoon.
Johannesburg EMS spokesperson Xolile Khumalo says the patient has been transported to a nearby hospital for further care.
Emergency workers on the scene confirmed that a vehicle transporting an unconfirmed substance in a cylinder on a trailer collided with a light motor vehicle.
The trailer connected to the tanker then dislodged from the vehicle, landed on the freeway and exploded.
The substance spread across the N1 northbound, however firefighters covered it with sand to prevent further detonations.
JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla says currently there are no causalities confirmed and investigations will continue.
On arrival on scene, the tanker carrying an unconfirmed substance had exploded and was engulfed in flames.
One person was treated for moderate injuries and taken by Emer-G-Med ambulance to a nearby hospital for further care. https://t.co/SrHg1LJ89g @EMER_G_MED #TankerExplosion https://t.co/EkJ2nnC8XC
