One person has been killed and two other wounded after three men attacked a prominent ‘Shia Mosque’ in Verulam, KwaZulu-Natal.
It’s understood the three men reportedly foreign nationals wearing balaclavas allegedly stormed the Imam Hussain mosque on Thursday afternoon, slitting the throat of at least one person believed to be a religious leader.
The police’s Nqobile Gwala also confirmed that parts of the building were set on fire.
“The suspects set certain rooms alight and then fled in their getaway vehicle. The motive of the attack is unknown at this stage. Verulam police are investigating three counts of attempted murder and arson. No arrests have been made at this stage.”
The facility is controversial site in the Durban community and is a well-known ‘Shia Mosque’ by local Muslims.
