Trade union NUMSA has filed papers at the North Gauteng High Court to stop loadshedding. The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa says the ANC that leads the government is not moving swiftly and decisively to prevent the destructive rolling blackouts that sabotage the economy and our people.
In a discussion with Radio Islam International, spokesperson Phakamile Hlubi-Majola said it is about time the working class organised itself to force a corrupt ANC government to take decisions in our interest as the majority.
Load shedding has cost the country over 2 trillion rands and has impacted the health sector majorly. Continuous blackouts have caused many healthcare sectors and hospitals to collapse, making it impossible to keep patients alive.
According to Majola, the decision to take the battle to court is the only platform upon which the ANC government will speak the truth concerning the energy policy.
She says, “In a court and under oath where they have to provide evidence.”
Following both government and Eskom leadership’s media conferences over the past few days on the state of Eskom and its challenges, Majola said there is no hope, and NUMSA remains more convinced to proceed with court action.
The States response to the catastrophe is to invite the private sector to become more involved in energy generation.
There needs to be something fixed with the decision-making process of the ANC government, and it’s clear the agenda is not about resolving the load shedding but about perpetuating a crisis, particularly for the privately renewable energy sector that can take hold of energy generation in South Africa.
“This is the battle of the survival of this country and our development,” she says.
