NUM cals for probe into mines

October 18, 2007
The National Union of Mineworkers is calling on the Department of Justice and the Directorate of Public Prosecutions to start prosecuting the people responsible at South Africa's deadly mines.

NUM general secretary Frans Baleni was reacting to the death of a mine worker at Anglo Platinum’s Paardekraal shaft in Rustenburg.

Another miner was seriously injured.

The death brings to at least six the number of miners killed in separate incidents at Anglo Platinum,

Minerals and Energy Minister Buyelwa Sonjica has promised a “tightening up” of health and safety legislation to prevent mining accidents.
