Nokia has unveiled its Android flagship smartphone, the Nokia 8 which is expected to go up against the Samsung Galaxy S8s and Apple iPhones that dominate the smartphone world.
The smartphone is made by HMD Global, which has already released the Nokia 3, Nokia 5, and Nokia 6 in South Africa.
Endgadget who was given early access to the device reports the Nokia 8 features a 5.3-inch 2,560 x 1,440 LCD display, an aluminium body and measures just 4.6mm thick near the top and bottom edges and 7.3mm “on average” through the whole device.
The Nokia 8 is available in four colours: Polished Blue, Polished Copper, Tempered Blue, and Steel and is set to go on sale for €599 (R 10,200) in September.
It will be powered by Qualcomm’s heavyweight Snapdragon 835 processor. To ensure it can handle the strain, there’s a copper cooling pipe that runs across the phone from one corner of the device to the other to help dissipate heat and keep the device cool to the touch, even during heavy processing.
The device is on trend with dual rear-facing cameras (one monochrome, one color) splurging on a front-facing camera with the same 13-megapixel resolution as the other two. In addition to being capable of 13-MP stills, each camera is equipped with an f/2.0 Zeiss lens.
The combination of the three cameras and that cooling system enable one the Nokia 8’s flagship features: Dual Sight, wherein the phone displays and records from both the front- and rear-facing cameras at once.
Nokia has added a livestream button into its native camera app that will let users instantly broadcast to social media which at the moment includes Twitter and Facebook.
The Nokia 8 further features three embedded microphones and OZO Audio, which allows for the recording of 360-degree spatial surround sound.
