After 17 years, Finnish brand Nokia has resurrected its iconic and ‘indestructible’ 3310 mobile phone.
The new version of the 3310 was unveiled yesterday at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona by HMD Global, a Finnish company made up largely of former Nokia employees that has acquired the rights to the Nokia brand.
Nokia has sold 126 million of its original 3310 phone since it was first introduced back in September, 2000.
Unlike the original which was known for its sturdiness, the new Nokia 3310 will allow web browsing.
HMD’S Arto Nummela says the new version will bring back its predecessor’s popular “Snake” game and distinctive ringtones,
“The telephone will allow you to talk for 22 hours, ten times more than the original.”
The new 3310 also takes micro-sim cards, so backwards compatibility won’t be an issue for those looking for a “digital detox” from their smartphones.
The phone will be available in red, yellow, gray and the signature dark blue matte and will weigh 79.6g with a 2.4-inch 320 x 240 color display.
In addition to the new 3310, HMD presented three new smartphones, the Nokia 3, Nokia 5 and Nokia 6 which will sell for different prices.
HMD Global says the new version “will retail at an average global retail price” of $51 (about R660).
There is no indication when the Nokia 3310 might be available to consumers in South Africa.
