President Cyril Ramaphosa has urged South Africans to stay calm and not be alarmed by rumours that the country will be moving back to level three of the COVID-19 lockdown.

Ramaphosa was responding to questions in the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) on Tuesday on COVID-19 and government’s fight against corruption.

Rumours surrounding the move to level three of the COVID-19 lockdown was widely circulated on social media platforms with many people contacting Radio Islam to verify if the messages were true.

Ramaphosa denied that a move back to level three is imminent.

“I don’t want to be alarmist. I don’t want our people to be alarmed with rumours such as we are going to level 3, that is simply not true. I want to assure everyone that is not true, if it ever gets there, I will be the one to advise the nation where we are and where we are going to.”

Ramaphosa says he still remains concerned about public behaviour and indicated that he may address the nation soon.

“I received a report today. I want to look at the report very closely and also than have an opportunity in the coming days, possibly next week of being able to address the people of South Africa about what we now need to do in the light of what we are going through.”

Ramaphosa has urged South Africans to continue adhering to the Coronavirus regulations by the Medical Advisory Committee as the country moves towards the festive period where “people let their guard down.”
