With weather forecasters predicting no heavy or significant rainfall in Gauteng until January 2018, the Water and Sanitation Department has urged residents to conserve and use water sparingly.
The department says Gauteng can expect rain in the early summer from October until December but significant rain will only start falling from January.
Spokesperson Sputnik Ratau says the minimal rainfall will affect Gauteng’s dam levels.
“We will continue to see probably for the next few weeks the continued decline of our dam levels going towards the summer months.”
Ratau says at the same time last year dams levels, especially the Vaal Dam reached critical state forcing the Gauteng province to use the reserve dam in the Free State and the Sterkfontein Dam to refill the integrated Vaal River System.
He says although dam levels have improved significantly, residents should not become complacent.
“We have to consider the fact that South Africa continues to be a water scarce country and therefore we need to continue to use water sparingly.”
Ratau says the department was encouraged by how Gauteng resident responded to the imposition of water restrictions last year and that the conscious use and behaviour towards water must be part of people’s livelihood.
