Pikitup has urged residents to refrain from giving presents or ‘Christmas Boxes’ to its employees for safety reasons.
The waste management company says while it understands the gesture of giving presents to be a common practice during the festive period, people go out wearing Pikitup uniforms claiming to be from Pikitup are actually criminals.
Acting general manager Bulelwa Zimba says Pikitup has taken the decision that employees are prohibited from asking for Christmas gifts.
“As we understand this to have been a common practice in the past, due to criminal elements and for the safety of residents we wish to urge residents to refrain from giving Pikitup employees a Christmas donation.”
Zimba says Pikitup has hired more than a thousand temporary staff to ensure that refuse collection continue as normal throughout the festive season.
“However on Christmas day and New Years Day refuse collection will not happen. The refuse collection that supposed to be taking place on those days will be collected on the following day.”
Earlier this month ten people including three Pikitup employees were arrested in the South of Johannesburg last week on charges of fraud and misrepresentation.
