New White House press secretary Jen Psaki says she has a “deep respect for the role of a free and independent press in the US’ democracy.”
Psaki was speaking to the media on Thursday following the inauguration of Joe Biden as the 46th President of the United States.
Biden took the oath of office on Wednesday during a scaled-down inauguration due to the coronavirus pandemic, which has killed more than 400,000 people in the US.
Kamala Harris also took the oath of office, making history as the first black and female vice-president in the history of the United States.
Psaki says she travelled the world to promote democracy where she saw the power of truth and setting an example of engagement and transparency.
“There will be moments where we disagree and there will be certainly days where we disagree for extensive parts of the briefing even perhaps. However we have a common goal which is sharing information with the American people. If the president were standing here with me today, he would say he works for the American people, I work for him, so I also work for the American people. But his objective and his commitment is to bring transparency and truth back to government.”
At 78-years-old Biden is the oldest president to be inaugurated.
