A new book by top-selling author, journalist, and assistant editor at News 24, Pieter du Toit, has hit the shelves.

In his book, “ANC Billionaires”, released by Jonathan Ball Publishers, du Toit explores the possibility that the capitalist class and the liberation movement made covert agreements to maintain the status quo regarding the economic policy of South Africa.

He also demonstrates in the book how unprepared the ANC was to handle the clash of business and politics. He further examines the problematic connection between capital and the ANC before, during, and after the country’s transition to democracy through first-person testimonies by significant figures.

It also sheds light on the millionaires and billionaires who benefited from their connections to the party and industry, including Tokyo Sexwale, Cyril Ramaphosa, Saki Macozoma, and Patrice Motsepe, who had access to special empowerment agreements mediated by firms like Anglo-American.

According to an award-winning journalist and assistant editor at News24, Pieter du Toit, who spoke with Radio Islam International, the relationship between capital business and the liberation movement dates back to September 1985, when a group of white South African business leaders travelled to a game lodge in Zambia to meet with the exiled ANC leadership under Oliver Tambo and Thabo Mbeki.

Du Toit claims that the visit catalysed a well-organised and financially supported campaign by big businesses to sway political change in South Africa.
