Today marks exactly four years since Madiba’s passing, he died at the age of 95 after battling a recurring lung infection.
The Nelson Mandela Foundation will mark the day by unveiling the first Nelson Mandela Centenary project – the Unthreading Mandela Exhibition.
The event will be addressed by the United Democratic Movement’s (UDM) Bantu Holomisa and Minister in the Presidency Jeff Radebe, who is the chairperson of government’s Inter-Ministerial Committee on Nelson Mandela’s Centenary.
Freedom Park will also remember Madiba’s legacy of peace and nation building by hosting a reconciliation interfaith prayer and human chain event today. The objective of the event is to encourage individuals and communities to take responsibility for peace and unity.
Government is planning centenary celebrations for the late international statesman and first President of a free and democratic South Africa, which will take place next year.
Madiba would have turned 100 years on 18 July 2018.
