One of the people injured in the N3 bridge collapse is in a medically induced coma in Randfontein.
Transport Minister Joe Maswanganyi and Gauteng Transport MEC Ismail Vadi visited the woman at a private hospital on Thursday.
Five people were injured when the structure came down in the early hours of Wednesday resulting in the full closure of the N3 north and south bound between the M2 Geldenhuys and N3 Gillooly’s interchanges.
Vadi says the woman is in a critical but stable condition at the Randfontein private hospital.
“She sustained severe injuries to her leg, some of her ribs might be fractured. And there are some heebie-jeebies. So I think we’re quite happy that she’s alive.”
Meanwhile Maswanganyi has welcomed a forensic investigation to determine the cause of the collapse of the N3 pedestrian bridge.
In a statement, the transport department said: “Minister Maswanganyi commends the swift response and collaboration by SANRAL, the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport and Ekurhuleni Municipality for ensuring that they attend to the scene and assist the injured.”
The road has now been declared safe after engineers spent the night removing the debris.
