The Attorney for four people arrested for alleged terrorism related activities says Muslims are willing to cooperate with authorities and there is no need to raid their homes.
Specialised crime fighting unit The Hawks raided two houses – one in Newclare and another in Azaadville yesterday where they confiscated a number of items including computers and cellphones.
It’s understood the four suspects were identified after planning to fly to Syria last year but it hasn’t been officially disclosed whether they were intending to join ISIS.
The suspects are expected to appear in courts in Johannesburg and Kagiso today on terrorism-related charges
Attorney Yousha Tayob says it’s worrying that the Hawks have used the terror legislation protection of constitutional democracy and terror related act to issue the warrants for the raid on the Muslim family’s homes.
“We are not certain what they want to try and link it to. One just hope they paint the Israeli’s with the same brush because part of the warrant refers to assisting ISIL and there’s be queries from our side as to the hundreds and hundreds of Jewish South Africans who travel to Israel to serve in the IDF or assist the Israeli’s in the oppression of the Palestinians and others all over the world.”
Tayob says South Africa has stood as a bastion in protecting the rights of Muslims.
“The government is also under substantial pressure to toe the line and South Africa being literally at the centre of Africa, I think the western forces, the Israeli agenda, the Mossad agenda is to get South Africa on board because historically certain alleged terrorists have has connections to South Africa and they want South Africa to clamp down.”
Tayob says they will be meeting with the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigations (DPCI) to discuss the warrants and assure the authorities that Muslim South Africans are willing to cooperate and assist in the fight against terror.
