May 19, 2017

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 19-05-2017

The Islamic Burial Council of Gauteng which represents several burial organizations in the province has warned the community about a scam involving the extortion of money for funerals.

It’s understood individuals purporting to be from an orphanage in Benoni east of Johannesburg are allegedly making telephone calls to various residents and organisations in the community claiming they require funding or support for the burial of children, adults or their loved ones.

The Islamic Burial Council’s Muhammad Cajee told Radio Islam people should be careful before parting with their cash.

“This is a complete scam going on for the last three years. People have been scammed into depositing money into accounts of various people and the last circumstances is where a person is being asked to eWallet money to a cellphone number.”

Cajee says no burial organisation would make demands on any family for money in any way.

“If there is a need for somebody to be buried or assisted, the Muslim community at large funds burial organizations and basically we will assist any family that is destitute to do the burial. We’ve never turned anybody away and we’ve never asked anybody or demanded money from any person or family member.”

Loonat says the organization has taken a firm decision to use the full extent of the law to prosecute the individuals that are behind the malicious scam.
