With Thousands of bottles of Zam Zam water being destroyed and many illegal refilling plants and stores sealed by the authorities in raids across Saudi Arabia, concerns have been raised by South African Muslims about the Zamzam they have bought.
The demand for the precious water increases in the holy month of Ramadan as citizens and residents prefer Zam Zam water at iftar.
Last year Secretary General of the Jamiatul Ulama South Africa Moulana Ebrahim Bham cautioned Muslims to be wary before buying Zam Zam water in case it may be fake or just ordinary tap water.
A local retailer says he doesn’t want to encourage nor discourage people from buying Zam Zam.
“People must use their discretion when buying Zam Zam, keeping many factors in mind that while in Saudi Arabia Muslim are only allowed to take out 5 litres of Zam Zam from Kingdom, how are 10 litres of Zam Zam coming out of the kingdom.”
The retailer says the Zam Zam water being imported to South Africa needs to be tested to see if it’s not fake.
Earlier this week questions were also raised about the high cost of Zam Zam water in South Africa with one retailer saying it was a “money making scheme” and that its unlikely that a 10 litre bottle of Zam Zam could cost as much as R400.
