The Jamiatul Ulama South Africa has urged Muslims to be cautious about Islamic outlets that are selling bottles of Zam Zam water that may be allegedly fake and filled with ordinary tap water.
Zam Zam water is derived from the well of Zam Zam in Makkah, Saudi Arabia and is widely consumed in South Africa and worldwide especially during the month of Ramadaan.
Secretary General Moulana Ebrahim Bham told Radio Islam a reputable Muslim retailer which sells Islamic goods including Zam Zam water informed the Jamiat of the fake Zam Zam by providing evidence of the fraud.
Ml. Bham says the evidence has not been tested, but is enough for people to be apprehensive and take the necessary precautions.
“There is something like this that people are packing “Zam Zam” water in boxes very similar to the ones that come out of Saudi nowadays in the white and blue boxes. When it was verified and checked out, the water did not resemble the taste of Zam Zam at all.”
Moulana Bham says the plastic bottle the “Zam Zam” is packed in is manufactured by a local South African company, which is clearly labeled at the bottom of the bottle.
“The person who was distributing it was approached and he seemed to have come through with certain doubts and therefore what we are saying and what we are warning is that people shouldn’t take everything at face value.”
Moulana Bham says while people may be concerned about the allegations of the fake Zam Zam, they need to perhaps just look into the credentials of the person whom they are dealing with, to look at his track record and also look at the bottle itself.
