Muslim schoolchildren in Brisbane, Australia have been targeted in an Islamophobic attack after a bag featuring a swastika and containing a severed pig’s head was left at a school’s front gate.
Acting school chairman Ali Kadri told the Brisbane Times the bag was removed from the Islamic College of Brisbane in the suburb of Karawatha on Wednesday before students arrived but staff were shaken.
“They’re worried because, while it’s a minor thing, there are really young kids who go to that school, because it goes from Prep to year 12. It’s about the safety of the kids. If somebody’s going to do this, given the climate, anything else could happen as well. So it’s really scary.”
Kadri says camera footage at the school shows that a group of youngsters may be allegedly responsible for the act.
He says the footage had been passed on to the local police.
Kadri says he has no doubt the incident is a “hate crime” against Muslims.
“Right wing extremists, including some politicians and shock jocks who demonise Islamic schools, are responsible for this.”
Kadri says Students had been informed of the attack and counselling has been made available.
This is first time the Islamic College of Brisbane had been targeted in such a matter, although there had been a similar incident at the Holland Park Masjid.
