The National Muslims Prison Board has confirmed that all food being served to Muslim inmates at Leeukop Prison in Pretoria is certified Halaal by the South African National Halaal Authority (SANHA).
It emerged last week that inmates at the prison claimed they are not given halaal food, with one prisoner reportedly being on a hunger strike for 13 days.
Following a meeting at Leeukop with management and Spiritual Care Workers, the National Muslim Prison Board’s Mahmood Bhulay says the slaughter process at the prison met Halaal requirements.
“We have two slaughterers there at the abattoir who slaughter the beef halaal, for not only Muslims but for all the inmates at Leeukop Prison.”
Bhulay says there was no need for the inmates reported hunger strike, as there is other food for prisoners.
“There’s fish, eggs, there’s breakfast cereals, there’s jams and all those things that he can eat, and he can eat bread. There’s so many things he can eat. Why must he go on a hunger strike?”
Bhulay says if people have any queries about the food being served to Muslims at prisons, they are welcomed to contact the National Muslim Prison Board.
