An anonymous Muslim man has donated a hundred thousand rand towards The Ikhaya Covers Project which aims to improve the lives of people residing in informal settlements.
Ikhaya Covers which was conceptionalised about 8 months ago was officially launched in Grassy Park informal settlement in Cape Town today.
The project involves a sheath called the Ikhaya cover which assists people living in shacks to cover the roofs of their dwelling to keep the rain out and stop flooding.
A hundred Residents of Grassy Park have become the first recipients of the Ikhaya Cover.
Coordinator of the project Ismail Moola says shack dwellers face many challenges
“One the challengers shack dwellers face is when it rains their shacks get flooded and a lot of it gets flooded not from groundwater but because their roofs are not properly insulated.”
Maryanne Mitchell, a resident says she is thankful for the assistance.
“I want to cry because it’s a good thing that we received sails for our houses because sometimes in winter we can’t even walk properly in our houses.”
Moola says with generous funding the project could be rolled out to other areas in the future.
