MultiChoice says ANN7 will no longer be broadcast on DStv when it’s contract with the Gupta backed news channel expires next year.
City Press newspaper reports that the decision was taken during various meetings where concerns were raised over the reputational damage the Gupta-founded news channel is causing the MultiChoice brand.
It follows a public outcry after the revelation that MultiChoice is paying at least R50 million per year to broadcast ANN7, with the agreement amended to increase the annual fee to R150 million.
City Press reports the news sparked a public campaign to convince DStv subscribers to cancel their subscriptions in protest.
It says other reasons included that the channel was biased and promoting a factional agenda in which individuals were being targeted for attack – as well as commercial considerations and concerns about production quality.
Infinity Media, which now owns ANN7, told City Press that it does not believe “MultiChoice would discuss confidential contractual issues with third parties as it would be unethical to do so”.
