Mufti Siraaj Desai’s Step Brother Killed in Port Elizabeth

May 12, 2016

Faizel Patel, 2016-05-12

The step brother of well-known Islamic scholar Mufti Siraaj Desai has been killed in an apparent robbery in Port Elizabeth.

It’s understood 47-year-old Naiem Desai was delivering bread at a spaza shop with his two co-workers in Helenvale also known as Katanga near Malabar this morning when he was apparently shot by a member of a gang who tried to rob him.

The police’s Sandra Janse van Rensburg says they are investigating a case of murder.

“While his two co-workers were inside a spaza shop delivering bread, they heard gunshots being fired. On rushing out of the shop, they noticed four suspects running away from the driver side of the truck. Desai was shot and passed away on the scene.”

Van Rensburg says the deceased firearm and cell phone was taken and the motive for the shooting appears to be robbery.

“No suspects have been arrested and the investigation is ongoing”

Police have appealed to anyone in the community that have information on the incident to come forward.
