The Deputy Minister for Education Envar Surti says ICT technology in eduction and schools is a critical component and innovative skill which is required to ensure that educators and learners achieve excellence.
Surti was speaking on the first day of the 2018 academic year at the MC Kharbhai School for the Deaf in Lenasia, south of Johannesburg.
The MTN SA Foundation in partnership with the office of the Deputy Minister launched its “Back to School Programme 2018” with the handover of a R750,000 multimedia centre to the special needs school on Wednesday.
The multimedia centre features a 20 seater workstation loaded with curriculum aligned content, printers and an interactive whiteboard.
It has also been equipped with a modem, server and 20GB of data a month subsidised for the next 24 months. Cameras and special software for learners with hearing impairment also feature.
Surtee says its important that special needs schools have the appropriate technology that assists children that have challenges.
He says the department of education has also digitized more than 50% of curriculum content in schools making it more interactive to encourage autonomous learning.
“It’s very, very critical, we are in the fourth industrial revelotuion ICT. We’ve made a committement that all out specialist schools will be provided with laboratories and ICT’s to assist them in the process of teaching and learning.”
MTN’s Khusile Mtunzi-Hairwadzi says education remains a critical issue, and that their “Back to School” programme enables access to learning by providing schools across the country with much needed multimedia centres.
“MC Kharbhai is actually offering a platform that children with hearing deficiencies and deafness will benefit. From a technology perspective, that computer lab is specifically designed for children with hearing problems.”
In addition, MTN also handed over 404 pairs of school shoes, bags and stationery packs to the learners while technology company Mustek donated fifteen notebook computers.
