Members of Parliament (MPs) are debating on Tuesday whether to support or reject the Section 89 Independent Panel report that found President Cyril Ramaphosa may have violated his oath of office concerning the theft of foreign currency at his Phala Phala Farm.

The session is currently underway at the Cape Town City Hall, where 400 MPs are expected to vote on whether the president should face an impeachment inquiry over the scandal.

National Assembly Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula has declined requests to allow Tuesday’s historic vote to be conducted by a secret ballot.

Meanwhile, a small group of protesters gathered outside the venue to picket against the ANC and Ramaphosa.

It’s understood that the group, led by expelled ANC member Carl Niehaus, tried to get closer to the hall precinct when officers intervened.

In the lead-up to the debate, opposition parties have expressed their desire for Ramaphosa to vacate office over the matter.
