Mpho Phalatse has been voted out as the City of Johannesburg executive mayor after councillors voted for her removal with 140 votes in support of the motion of no confidence.
A total of 129 councillors voted for Phalatse to remain in the role.
Phalatse faced three motions-of-no confidence after three minority parties including the African Transformation Movement (ATM), African Independent Congress and Al Jama-ah each tabled a motion.
On Thursday, the African National Congress (ANC) Johannesburg chairperson Dada Morero said he will not run for the mayoral position again should Mayor Mpho Phalatse be ousted.
Morero was elected mayor in September 2022 but was later removed after the courts ruled that he obtained the seat unlawfully.
Reports suggest that several parties including the Economic Freedom Fighter (EFF) are backing Al Jama-ah’s Thapelo Ahmed as the City of Johannesburg’s new mayor.
