At least 31 worshippers have been killed and 100 others injured in the city of Karbala in Iraq.

The Associated Press (AP) reports the incident happened when part of a walkway collapsed during Ashura commemorations Tuesday.

The incident happened toward the end of the Ashura procession, causing panic and a stampede.

It’s the deadliest stampede in recent history of Ashura during the first Islamic month of Muharram.

Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims embark to the city of Karbala in Iraq every year to commemorate the death of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) grandson, Hazrat Hussain (RA).

This year’s somber commemoration comes amid rising tensions in the Middle East and the crisis between Iran and the U.S. in the wake of the collapsing nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers.
