The shooting and death of Monique Horn, a 23-year-old woman, in the Johannesburg neighbourhood of Eldorado Park, brought condemnation once again.

Concerned about the murder, the #YesEldosAgain movement has sent its condolences to Horn’s family.

In an interview with Radio Islam International on Monday, Community organiser Dereleen James claimed that the ongoing gang-related shootings had traumatised the residents of Eldorado Park. However, more fatalities are occurring.

“Our community is completely traumatised now because it seems as though we are taking on the face of the Cape Flats.”

After Monique Horn’s murder, she claimed another victim had been killed in a gang-related killing.

James had already requested assistance from the government in light of the criminality taking place in the neighbourhood.

But according to her, the government has not consistently supported the community during its crises.

“There is nothing tangible; there is nothing that focuses on Eldorado Park.” We do not have an operational plan for Eldorado Park as yet.”

To raise awareness and hold the government responsible, the community of Eldorado Park engaged in a peaceful protest last year that lasted 100 days and ended on December 21st, 2022.

According to James, Eldorado Park’s community rights have been abused, and the government has completely failed the area.
