Mopping-up operations have been underway throughout the greater Johannesburg area, lashed by heavy rainfalls over the past week. Communities in Protea Glen and Protea South are working around the clock to finish mopping up operations at their homes, which were damaged by the floods that devastated parts of the neighbourhood on Friday morning, as are the residents of Lenasia, which was as heavily hit by the floods.
Radio Islam International discusses the latest with the Johannesburg MMC for infrastructure, Michael Sun.
Overseeing City Power, Johannesburg Water and Pick It Up, the Department of EISD focused on resolving many power outages from the rain and flood.
The badly affected areas included Lenasia, where the neighbourhood was flooded, and Roodepoort. MMC Sun said progress had been made in the regions, and restoration has been seen. However, there are some outages in need of attendance.
Meanwhile, Torrential rain is causing tremendous amounts of damage to our very old infrastructure.
According to MMC Sun, transformers at the substation in Rooderport look well maintained but are transformers installed by manufacturers in the 1950s.
Also playing a heavily impacted cause are the old underground pipes where our roads have been washed away and decaying because of the heavy rain.
However, MMC told Radio Islam International the EISD has a bigger plan in place and has invested tremendous amounts of money in replacing, repairing and renewing the infrastructure in the City of Johannesburg.
