Mmusi Maimane Re-Elected as DA Leader, Athol Trollip as Federal Chair

April 08, 2018

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 08-04-2018

Mmusi Maimane has been re-elected unopposed as leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA) at its Federal Congress to lead the party into the 2019 general elections.

Nelson Mandela Bay Mayor Athol Trollip has been re-elected as federal chair while James Selfe has been elected as the federal council chair.

Trollip beat Tshwane Mayor Solly Msimanga, while Annelie Lotriet came in third.

The three deputy federal chairpersons elected include Michael Waters, Ivan Meyer and Refiloe Ntsekhe.

Dion George has been elected as the federal finance chair.

The DA held its elective congress at the Pretoria Showgrounds this weekend where it also made changes to its policies and constitution including the Diversity and Recall clause.

Closing the final day of the congress, Maimane says the DA have renewed the commitment of the party that has given them a sense of purpose since its founding.

“This weekend we have reaffirmed that our purpose as Democrats is not to fight for a better behaved ANC, but for an entirely new government for South Africa, led by us and our values.

Maimane says the DA’s values will guide the party’s victory in the 2019 elections.

“Our people know that we represent all of them, black, white, Indian and coloured. Our people must know that we’re the only party that is interested in looking for those who are left out and governs in such a way that we deliver for the poor.”
Maimane also lambasted those that wanted to divide South Africa on basis race.

“Anyone whether here, whether anywhere, if you intent on dividing South Africans on the basis of race, I want to say this you unequivocally, the DA is not for you and I will reaffirm that if you are a racist, don’t you dare even vote for us! Don’t you dare! Our party is for all South Africans.”

Maimane says the 2019 elections is a huge task and has urged members to go house to house, door to door and tell South Africans the DA is the future of the country.
