Secretary General of the Jamiatul Ulama South Africa Moulana Ebrahim Bham says a quote in which he referred to ‘Jews as fleas’ in the Jewish Chronicle has been taken out of context and is a deliberate attempt to undermine him and the Palestine Expo event in the UK which is the real target.
Ml Bham is currently attending the expo being held at the Queen Elizabeth II Centre in Westminster, London which is being touted as the biggest pro-Palestinian event in Europe.
Speakers at the event include journalist John Pilger, Israeli academic Ilan Pappe, and writer, Ben White.
In the article, the Jewish Chronicle quotes Ml Bham as saying: ‘Just as fleas are also animals. Just as fleas are also animals, they are also part of human beings like that’.
But Ml. Bham rejects the accusation of anti-Semitism and says the remark was a quote by Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels, who referred to Jews as ‘fleas’ which he was using to warn of the dangers of dehumanising entire groups of people, including Jews.
“I make this clear in my talk. I clearly use this quote to show how the Nazi’s had viewed and treated the Jewish people as sub-human. I categorically did not agree and do not agree with any sub-human categorization of the Jewish community or any other people.”
Ml Bham says he also used Goebbels quote to lay emphasis on the dehumanisation of the Palestinian people by the state of Israel.
“This is supported by statements by Israeli state leaders like Golda Meir, denying the very existence of Palestinian people.”
Ml. Bham says he was reiterating the point that the dehumanisation of any people should not happen, especially by those who have suffered this in the not too distant past.
