MJC: “SAA Compliant With Halaal Food on Flights”

December 01, 2017

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 01-12-2017

The Muslim Judicial Council Halaal Trust (MJCHT) says nothing seems untoward in halaal certification processes after complaints emerged that food served on South African Airways (SAA) flights were not halaal.

The Daily Voice reports that Air Chefs staff based at the Cape Town International Airport, allege that the kitchen where the halaal food is prepared is being contaminated with pork by negligent co-workers

The paper reports that management was informed that non-halaal meats and utensils were being used in the halaal kitchen.

The complaint was apparently reported to the MJC who certifies Air Chefs, but according to workers, the inspectors were misled.

The MJC’s Sheigh Achmat Sedick told Radio Islam it performed an on-site inspection as soon as it received the complaint.

“The inspectors went there. He came back to tell us, he spoke to whoever it is, he checked out the entire system. He couldn’t find anything. In the report he told us that everything is as it should be and he could not find what the complaint was all about.”

SAA spokesman Tlali Tlali says they are aware of the allegations and the MJC inspection, and believes the workers acted in bad faith.

“The Chief Operating Officer of MJC, Sheikh Moosa Titus went to Air Chefs and met with our Head of Department at that facility, Ms Sipokazi Pupuma, to conduct a further audit on Wednesday and satisfied himself that all halaal processes stipulated were complied with.”

Tlali says the claims are baseless and malicious and appear to be the work of a handful disgruntled employees who wish to bring the name of the company into disrepute.
