Minister of Higher Education Dr Blade Nzimande has Condemned the Brutal Killing of an Eastern Cape Law Student

August 20, 2021

By Naadiya Adams

Minister Nzimande has passed his heartfelt condolences the family of Nosicelo Mtebeni whose remains were found after she was killed allegedly by her boyfriend.

“I denounce such barbaric and shameful acts committed against women, both in our institutions of learning and in society in general. Our society cannot continue harbouring such disgraceful people and criminals, who are hell-bent to tear the moral fibre of our society apart. What is so even saddening is that the suspect would even commit such gruesome act in a month in which we marks  and  celebrate Women’s Month,” said the Minister.

Mtebeni is the latest victim of gender-based violence, a fourth-year law student at the University of Fort Hare.

Mtebeni’s boyfriend, 25, has since been arrested and police on the scene have said they have a water-tight case against the accused.

“While we were busy at the scene our intelligence agents arrested the suspect. The Investigation continues. We are hoping to bring it to court on Monday,” says Kinana .

Students at the University of Fort Hare have called for the law to take its course.

A statement from Themba Masango #NotInMyName Secretary General, gave details of the incident “#NotInMyName condems with utmost disgust the killing of Nosicelo a fouth year LLB student from University of Fort whose dismembered body was found in a suitcase yesterday.  A black refuse bag found next to the suitcase contained some of her other body parts, while her head was reportedly found in a cupboard in her home.”

The Minister further said that the Department of Higher Education and Training has mandated the HIGHER HEALTH – an entity of the Department of Higher Education and Training which is responsible for implementing programmes against gender-based violence in university and TVET college campuses – to work together with the University of Fort Hare to provide psychological support to students and all affected parties.
